Wayne Rooney reveals turning down Saudi Offer to lead Birmingham City

Posted : 13 October 2023
Wayne Rooney revealed that he turned down an opportunity to manage in the Saudi Pro League before ultimately opting to take the reins at Birmingham City, a second-tier English side.

The former Manchester United and England striker, who had prior coaching stints with DC United and Derby County, was officially appointed as Birmingham's manager on Wednesday, at a time when the team currently holds the sixth position in the Championship.

Garry Cook, Birmingham's chief executive, disclosed that he had explored the possibility of bringing Rooney to Saudi Arabia during his previous role as the CEO of the Saudi Pro League.

"We had discussions regarding Saudi Arabia, but it wasn't a feasible option," Cook stated during a joint press conference with Rooney on Thursday.

Had Rooney accepted the offer to manage in Saudi Arabia, he would have followed in the footsteps of his former England teammate, Steven Gerrard, who assumed the role of manager at Al-Ettifaq back in July.

Rooney emphasized that his decision was in no way a slight to those managers who had chosen to embark on their coaching careers in Saudi Arabia, and he added, "For me, I believed that my own development and career path would take a different route."

He further elaborated, stating, "Returning to English football has always been a personal aspiration of mine. I've had opportunities at other clubs over the past four to six weeks, but after discussions with Birmingham, it became an easy choice. I am driven to achieve success, and it's clear that this club shares the same ambition."

Rooney's inaugural match in his new managerial role will be at the helm when Birmingham faces Middlesbrough on October 21st.
