Watford secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Luton at Vicarage Road, strengthening their push for a Championship play-off spot while leaving their rivals at the foot of the table. The win served as redemption for the Hornets, who had suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Luton in October.
Tom Dele-Bashiru put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot in the 11th minute after Luton goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski fouled Mamadou Doumbia, and Edo Kayembe doubled the lead in the 23rd minute, finishing off a well-worked move.
Luton’s struggles continued as they slumped to their ninth defeat in 12 league games, extending their winless run to 13 matches across all competitions.
Manager Matt Bloomfield, who took over from Rob Edwards in January, has been unable to turn things around, leaving the Hatters five points from safety. Their rapid decline now threatens a disastrous drop from the Premier League to League One in just two seasons, compounding the club’s woes.
For Watford, the victory ended a five-match losing streak at home and propelled them to ninth place, just three points away from a play-off position.
The Hornets displayed attacking intent throughout, with Giorgi Chakvetadze instrumental in setting up the second goal by skillfully evading a challenge before assisting Kayembe. With renewed momentum, Watford will be aiming to close the gap on the teams above them in the race for promotion.
