Wataru Endo Discusses Contrasting Coaching Styles

Posted : 15 November 2024

Wataru Endo, Liverpool's midfielder, has shared his thoughts on the contrasting coaching styles of his current club manager, Arne Slot, and Japan national team coach, Hajime Moriyasu. Despite struggling for regular playing time at Liverpool this season, with only five substitute appearances in the Premier League since Slot's arrival, Endo is still set to captain Japan in their World Cup qualifier against Indonesia. He pointed out that while Slot’s approach is more positional and precise, focusing on individual player placement, Moriyasu is more flexible, allowing players to adapt to different formations during matches.

Endo explained that Moriyasu’s flexibility in formation is something he appreciates, noting that the Japan coach offers players the freedom to shift between playing as a four or a three, depending on the situation. He compared this approach to the style of Jurgen Klopp, the former Liverpool manager, under whom he had played more regularly in the previous season. Despite his reduced role at Liverpool, Endo remains optimistic about his performance with the national team and is determined to maintain a high level of play.

The midfielder also addressed concerns regarding his lack of match time at Liverpool and its potential impact on his form for Japan. He acknowledged that people often question whether a lack of playing time affects his match sharpness but reassured that he is working hard in training to stay fit and ready. As Japan’s captain, Endo feels a responsibility to perform at his best and ensure that his leadership remains effective during World Cup qualifiers.

Endo’s move from Stuttgart to Liverpool in August 2023 was a surprise to many, and after a slow start, he quickly found his rhythm under Klopp. His debut season saw him play 43 games across all competitions, including 29 in the Premier League. However, since Klopp's departure, Endo has seen less action under Slot, who has favoured Dutch midfielder Ryan Gravenberch in central midfield.

Despite his reduced role at club level, Endo remains committed to his responsibilities with Japan, where he continues to be a first-choice player. With Japan on track for their eighth consecutive World Cup appearance, Endo is focused on maintaining his fitness and confidence, ensuring that his national team performance remains at a high standard.
