Warri Wolves retain Delta State Federation Cup title

Shemaye Amatesiro's stunning corner kick was all Warri Wolves Football Club of Warri needed to defeat the hard-fighting De Sapele Lions Football Club of Sapele and retain the Delta Football Association Federation Cup title.

Warri Wolves, unbeaten in the Nigeria National League, carried their form into the Delta Football Association Federation Cup, where they needed what could arguably be the goal of the year. Amatesiro scored from a corner kick to give the Seasiders a 2-1 victory in a keenly contested encounter at the Steven Keshi International Stadium in Asaba, maintaining their stranglehold on the Federation Cup title.

The Coach Napoleon Aluma-led side had taken the lead in the 5th minute after Jude Ebhohon converted a penalty following a handball committed by a Sapele Lions player inside his side's vital area.

Sapele Lions, nicknamed the "comeback kings," equalized in the 32nd minute when Matthias Abuzor headed into an empty net during a goalmouth scramble, giving the Lions a glimmer of hope for their first-ever FA Cup title.

However, their dream was dashed in the early minutes of the second half with Amatesiro's corner kick.

Earlier, Delta Queens Football Club of Asaba maintained its dominance in the women's category. A quick-fire brace by the fleet-footed Destiny Itobor, scored in the 4th and 7th minutes, ensured the title holders went home with the trophy.

The Chairman of the Delta Football Association, Chief Godwin Adode, congratulated the teams for qualifying for the National Federation Cup and urged them to fly the state's flag high, noting that the quality of football displayed was a clear indication that the state had worthy representatives.

Chief Adode assured the teams of the DFA's full support to ensure they return with the coveted trophies. He also praised Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his unwavering commitment to sports development in Delta State, stating that his continued investment in the sector has kept the state in a strong position in Nigerian sports.

Adode further lauded the Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission for his ongoing support and dedication to football in the state, asserting that with such support, Delta would soon reclaim its rightful place in Nigerian football.

The DFA Chairman commended the Chief Executive Officer of Flexip Group, Mr. Rex Mafiana, for partnering with the DFA and encouraged more partnerships with other private-sector firms. He emphasized that the DFA was focused on transforming the state's football landscape through innovative initiatives that would greatly impact the nation's football in the near future.

For his part, Mr. Rex Mafiana, CEO of The Flexip Group, pledged to sustain the partnership with the DFA, promising that next year's edition would be better and calling on other firms to join in the development of football in Delta State.

The Vice Chairman of the DFA and Head of Competitions, Mr. Neville Ambakaderemo, stated that the DFA was re-engineering football in the state and was keen on working with stakeholders to bring back the glory days of Delta State Football.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of trophies, cash awards, and medals to the teams.

Also present were the Executive Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Onoriode Oborevwori, the Director General of the Sports Commission, Festus Ohwojero, ex-internationals Edema Fuludu, Sam Sodje, the immediate past Chairman of the DFA, Chief Kenneth Nwaomucha, and other football stakeholders.
