Wales' Euro 2024 qualification bid echoes 2019 comeback story: A familiar path to glory

Posted : 13 October 2023
Wales' bid to qualify for Euro 2024 bears a striking resemblance to their journey four years ago. In the previous European Championship, their qualification campaign followed a familiar pattern: a promising start, a difficult summer with consecutive defeats, and a recovery in the autumn, setting the stage for a thrilling finish. Manager Robert Page acknowledges the similarities and points to the experience the players gained in those pressurized situations.

Back in 2019, Wales faced a similar scenario, with their hopes of qualification hanging in the balance after early defeats. However, they turned things around with a crucial draw against Croatia, followed by wins over Azerbaijan and Hungary, ultimately securing their spot in Euro 2020. Now, in 2023, they face Croatia again, needing to win this weekend and then overcome Armenia and Turkey next month to qualify for Euro 2024.

While star players Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey are absent this time, several key figures from the 2019 campaign remain in the squad. Their captain, Ben Davies, emphasizes the importance of the upcoming matches and the need to approach them with a winning mentality.

Even if they don't secure automatic qualification, Wales could still have a chance via the play-offs, as they did for the 2023 World Cup. Beating Croatia would rejuvenate their belief in repeating their feat from four years ago and reaching the 2024 tournament in Germany.
