Virgil van Dijk Signs New Two-Year Contract with Liverpool

Posted : 17 April 2025

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has signed a new two-year contract with the club, extending his stay until 2027. The 33-year-old centre-back’s previous deal was set to expire at the end of the current season.

This new contract comes shortly after forward Mohamed Salah also committed his future to the club with a two-year extension. Van Dijk had been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain but made it clear that his heart was always set on staying at Liverpool.

Van Dijk, who has made 314 appearances for Liverpool since joining from Southampton in January 2018 for £75 million, expressed his strong connection with the club. "It was always Liverpool," he said, reaffirming his commitment.

He also shared his pride in being named the club’s captain in 2023 after Jordan Henderson's departure. "There wasn’t any doubt in my head that this is the place to be for me and my family," he added, emphasizing how much it means to him to be part of the Liverpool family.

Reflecting on his journey with the club, Van Dijk spoke about his joy in extending his career with Liverpool, having already won numerous prestigious trophies, including the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup.

He expressed his pride in being called an "adopted Scouser," which further strengthened his emotional bond with the city and the team. Van Dijk also highlighted his excitement about the future, stating that it feels "incredible" to continue this chapter of his career with the Reds.

As Van Dijk secures his future at the club, the fate of fellow defender Trent Alexander-Arnold remains uncertain.

Alexander-Arnold, who returned to training this week after an injury, is out of contract in July and has been linked with a move to Real Madrid. While Van Dijk and Salah’s contracts are settled, Alexander-Arnold's future at Liverpool is still a topic of speculation.
