Responding to their running challenges, the Minnesota Vikings traded for running back Cam Akers from the Los Angeles Rams.
The trade, awaiting a physical check, involves an exchange of 2026 draft picks: Vikings receiving a conditional seventh-round and Rams a sixth-round pick.
This season, the Vikings have the least NFL rushing yards, 69, after parting ways with Dalvin Cook and elevating Alexander Mattison.
Their emphasis on the passing game yielded the NFL's second-highest yards (674). At 0-2 this season, coach Kevin O'Connell expressed a desire for a more consistent running game.
The addition of Akers reconnects him with O'Connell and Wes Phillips, both previously with the Rams.
The Vikings have pursued backfield depth, especially after Kene Nwangwu's injury. It's uncertain if Akers will be Mattison's direct backup or if his role will be more prominent.
Akers' move concludes his uncertain relationship with the Rams. Coach Sean McVay's recent sidelining of Akers was termed a "coach's decision."
Akers expressed his confusion online, leading to McVay emphasizing their clear communication.
Previously, McVay considered giving Akers a fresh start elsewhere and has sought more urgency from him. The coach mentioned this situation is distinct from last year's but didn't elaborate.
