Victor Osimhen sets new record as Nigeria's top player in the Champions League
Posted : 20 April 2023
Victor Osimhen of Napoli has had an outstanding UEFA Champions League season thus far in 2022/2023, matching the number of goals scored by a Nigerian player in a single season.
Osimhen has now tied the record set by Obafemi Martins while playing for Inter Milan in the 2004–05 season with five goals.
Osimhen has been instrumental in Napoli's quest for European supremacy this season with his outstanding performances.
Osimhen's accomplishment is especially noteworthy because he tied the mark set by Obafemi Martins, one of Nigeria's most prolific goal scorers.
Martins is best known for his extraordinary time spent with Inter Milan, where he scored five goals in the 2004–2005 season to help the team advance to the competition's quarterfinals.
As a result of Napoli being eliminated from the Champions League, Victor Osimhen will focus on the Italian Serie A, where the Neapolitans are expected to win their first championship in more than 30 years.
With 21 goals, seven more than his nearest rival, the 24-year-old is the favorite to become the first African player to win the top scorer award in the Italian premier division.
