Victor Osimhen and Terem Moffi break records in Europe

Posted : 02 June 2023
The ongoing 2022/2023 football season has been witness to an extraordinary surge in productivity displayed by Nigerian attackers competing in various European leagues.

Two notable players, Victor Osimhen and Terem Moffi, have particularly stood out as exceptional performers in Serie A and Ligue 1, respectively.

In the realm of Serie A, Victor Osimhen has not only surpassed the previous record held by Simy Nwankwo but has set an entirely new benchmark for Nigerian players in the league.

The talented forward from Napoli has etched his name in history by becoming the highest-scoring Nigerian in any of Europe's top five leagues within a single campaign.

Osimhen's outstanding form has seen him find the back of the net an impressive 25 times in the league this season, firmly establishing himself as Nigeria's leading goal scorer in the prestigious Italian top flight.

Moreover, his incredible feat even surpasses the records set by the legendary AC Milan star, George Weah, making Osimhen the highest-scoring African player in the history of Serie A.

As proof of his exceptional performances, Osimhen has been nominated for the highly coveted Serie A Best Striker of the Year award, and he remains a strong contender to become the first African player ever to win the league's top scorer accolade.

Meanwhile, in Ligue 1, Terem Moffi has made a similarly substantial impact by breaking a long-standing record set by Victor Ikpeba, a renowned Nigerian player.

Ikpeba's record of 16 goals in the 1997/1998 season for AS Monaco had remained unchallenged until the arrival of Moffi.

The former Lorient star, currently showcasing his skills at OGC Nice, has impressively found the back of the net on 17 occasions throughout the season, surpassing Ikpeba's longstanding record.

While Moffi narrowly missed out on breaking the record last season with 14 goals, he has now firmly cemented his place in Nigerian football history as the highest-scoring Nigerian player in a single Ligue 1 campaign.
