Victor Olatunji dreams of Super Eagles, admires Ighalo, and legends

Posted : 30 September 2024

Sparta Prague's forward Victor Olatunji is currently in the spotlight following an impressive debut in the UEFA Champions League. In his inaugural match in Europe’s top-tier competition, Olatunji not only scored but also provided an assist, making him the first Nigerian player to achieve this feat.

Although Olatunji has yet to earn his first cap for the Super Eagles, he is optimistic about receiving a call-up to the national team. He expressed his deep desire to represent Nigeria, emphasizing the pride that comes with wearing the green jersey and the eagle emblem. He stated that doing so would motivate him to work diligently, recognizing the weight of representing a nation of over 220 million people.

In a recent interview with Blesk, the 25-year-old shared insights about his football journey, including his admiration for former Nigerian striker Odion Ighalo. He noted that wearing the national colors is a significant aspiration for many young players, particularly Nigerians, and that the honor drives them to give their best on the pitch.

While he hasn’t been contacted by the national team yet, Olatunji remains hopeful that his performances will catch the attention of Super Eagles selectors. He is determined to make an impact and earn a place in the squad, showcasing his skills and contributions at Sparta Prague.

Olatunji also discussed how he honors Cristiano Ronaldo with his goal celebrations. He stated that Ronaldo's dedication and work ethic both on and off the field serve as a source of inspiration for him. Though he has never met Ronaldo personally, he wants to remind others of the legendary player’s accomplishments in the Champions League through his celebrations.

So far this season, Olatunji has made a significant impact, scoring six goals in fifteen appearances for Sparta Prague. He attributes part of his inspiration to Ighalo, who he regards as a major influence on his career, especially during his successful spell in the Premier League.

Beyond his football endeavors, Olatunji enjoys listening to gospel music and has a particular fondness for Nigerian cuisine. He especially loves amala, a traditional dish from the Yoruba culture, which adds a touch of home to his life in Europe.
