Veterans Tournament: Kuje, Gwagwalada All Stars maintain unbeaten streak

Posted : 10 September 2024

Matchday 2 of the Abuja All Stars Veterans Tournament drew even more attention as top dignitaries, including the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, graced the event.

Held in the heart of the nation's capital, the tournament has quickly become a premier gathering not just for retired footballers but also for influential figures from various sectors.

Adeniyi, visibly impressed by the level of play despite many players being well into their 40s and 50s, expressed his admiration, giving a thumbs-up to the participating teams for their skill, energy, and passion.

The tournament, which boasts some of Nigeria’s football legends like Samson Siasia, Austin Eguavoen, Garba Lawal, and Tijani Babangida as its ambassadors, has also attracted a slew of national celebrities and former Super Eagles players.

It has provided a unique opportunity for these icons to network, reconnect with old friends, and relive the camaraderie of their playing days.

The atmosphere of the competition has turned into a melting pot of sportsmanship and nostalgia, making it an event of both football and social significance.

On the field, Kuje All Stars have established themselves as early tournament favorites after extending their unbeaten run with back-to-back victories.

Kuje’s triumph over Apo Fitness All Stars and Police Machine Legends has solidified their position as one of the most formidable teams in the tournament.

Their precise passing, disciplined defense, and clinical finishing have made them the team to beat, and other competitors will need to step up to dethrone them.

Gwagwalada All Stars are also making waves, following up their opening day win with a dominant 5-1 thrashing of Capital Sportiff Sports Club.

The match was a one-sided affair, with Gwagwalada’s superiority evident from the start. Capital Sportiff, despite pulling one goal back, was unable to match the fluidity and tactical prowess of Gwagwalada, further highlighting the gulf in class between the two sides.

Meanwhile, defending champions All Stars International found their dominance under serious threat as Jabi All Stars put up an impressive performance in a thrilling encounter.

The match was filled with end-to-end action right from the start, as both teams fought hard to take control of the game.

Jabi All Stars, who were considered underdogs going into the match, defied expectations with their resilient defense and sharp counterattacks.

Despite several near misses from both sides, the game ended in a goalless draw, leaving All Stars International frustrated but relieved to escape with a point.

Jabi’s performance sent a clear message to the rest of the competition that they are not a team to be taken lightly.

Their ability to hold the defending champions to a stalemate has raised eyebrows, and they could very well be dark horses as the tournament progresses.

Elsewhere, Apo Fitness All Stars, who had suffered a disappointing loss on the opening day, rebounded in style with a commanding 3-0 win over Nurudeen FC.

Apo Fitness, known for their high-pressing style, dominated the match from start to finish, showcasing their attacking flair and strong midfield control.

The victory has reignited their campaign, and they will be looking to build on this momentum moving forward.

Unity Sports Foundation (USF) also bounced back from their opening day defeat to Gwagwalada All Stars, with a narrow but hard-fought 1-0 win over the highly regarded Like Minds All Stars.

USF’s resolute defending and tactical discipline were key to their victory, as they managed to frustrate their opponents and secure a much-needed three points.

This result has revitalized their hopes in the tournament, proving that they are capable of competing with the best.

In another Matchday 2 fixture, UATH All Stars and MC Steve FC played out a tense and dramatic draw.

The game saw UATH launch a barrage of attacks, with wave after wave of pressure on MC Steve’s defense.

However, MC Steve FC held firm, displaying resilience and tactical discipline.

Despite UATH’s best efforts, they were unable to find a breakthrough, and both teams had to settle for a point.

As the Veterans Tournament progresses, the competition is heating up, with several teams emerging as potential challengers for the title.

Kuje and Gwagwalada All Stars have set the pace with their unbeaten runs, but with teams like Jabi All Stars and USF showing their potential, the road to victory is far from certain.

The presence of high-profile guests and national legends continues to add to the prestige of the event, making it one of the most anticipated tournaments in the region.
