Verona's bid for Super Eagles midfielder rejected by Southampton

Posted : 24 August 2023
Southampton Football Club has taken a definitive stance by rejecting an offer presented by Italian Serie A outfit Hellas Verona for the highly regarded Nigerian midfielder Joe Aribo.

Aribo, an integral part of the Super Eagles squad, has been subject to transfer speculations recently, with Southampton considering potential moves as they navigate their way through the aftermath of relegation to the Championship.

The offer extended by Verona fell short of Southampton's valuation for the talented midfielder, signifying the club's commitment to securing a deal that aligns with their financial expectations.

The transfer saga unfolds against the backdrop of a series of player movements orchestrated by Southampton this window, including the likes of Roméo Lavia, Tino Livramento, James Ward-Prowse, Mohammed Salisu, and Mislav Orsic.

With the transfer window deadline looming, the fate of Joe Aribo, along with other Nigerian players Paul Onuachu and Nathan Tella, remains undecided, as the possibility of their departure from the St Mary's stadium looms large.

The offer from Verona entailed a loan arrangement with an option for a permanent move at the conclusion of the 2023-2024 season. While Southampton rejected this initial proposition, Verona's interest in the former Rangers standout is unrelenting, and the club is expected to formulate another offer as they continue to pursue his services.

Intriguingly, the situation has not gone unnoticed by two undisclosed French Ligue 1 clubs, who are keenly observing Aribo's status, presumably contemplating a potential swoop for the versatile midfielder. Aribo's skill set, which encompasses the roles of winger, box-to-box midfielder, and support striker, makes him an enticing prospect.

Joe Aribo initially joined Southampton in a transfer deal valued at £6 million, with the possibility of this amount swelling to £10 million, contingent upon the fulfillment of performance-related benchmarks. Within his tenure at the club, the 27-year-old has graced the field in 30 official matches, contributing two goals to the team's endeavors.

As the transfer window countdown continues, the anticipation surrounding Joe Aribo's destination intensifies, echoing the complexities of the modern football transfer landscape and the strategic maneuvers clubs employ to solidify their squads for the upcoming season.
