Venezuela Advances to Copa America Quarterfinals with Win Over Mexico, Eliminates Jamaica

Posted : 27 June 2024

Venezuela secured a spot in the Copa America quarterfinals with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mexico on Wednesday, a result that also confirmed Jamaica's elimination from the tournament. Veteran striker Salomon Rondon, playing in Mexico, scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot, placing Venezuela at the top of Group B with six points from two games.

Despite the loss, Mexico can still advance to the knockout rounds if they defeat Ecuador in their final group game on Sunday. Mexico will rue their missed opportunity to equalize in the 87th minute when Orbelin Pineda's penalty was saved by Venezuela goalkeeper Rafael Romo. Earlier in the match, Rondon had given Venezuela the lead in the 57th minute, converting a penalty after Jon Aramburu was fouled by Julian Quinones.

Jamaica's exit from the tournament was confirmed after their 3-1 loss to Ecuador in Las Vegas earlier on Wednesday. Ecuador, having lost to Venezuela in their opening match, managed to fend off a spirited second-half comeback from Jamaica to secure a crucial three points. Kasey Palmer's own goal and a penalty from Chelsea-bound teenager Kendry Paez had given Ecuador a 2-0 lead before veteran striker Michail Antonio pulled one back for Jamaica.

Ecuador's victory was sealed in stoppage time when Alan Minda scored on a counter-attack as Jamaica pressed for an equalizer. Jamaica had a strong penalty claim denied 15 minutes before full-time when Ecuador's Alan Franco appeared to handle the ball in the area. Despite a VAR review, the referee decided there was no handball, allowing Ecuador to maintain their lead and secure the win.
