Liverpool edged closer to securing the Premier League title with a 2-1 victory over West Ham United at Anfield, thanks to a dramatic late goal from captain Virgil van Dijk. The Reds, now 13 points ahead of second-placed Arsenal with six matches remaining, could clinch the title as early as next weekend if Arsenal falters against Ipswich and Liverpool overcomes Leicester.
Luis Diaz had given the home side an early advantage after a precise assist from Mohamed Salah, who recently signed a contract extension with the club.
Despite the strong start, Liverpool failed to maintain control, and West Ham capitalized on their chances. The visitors equalized through a slice of luck when Andy Robertson inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.
West Ham, still not safe from relegation, posed a significant threat throughout the match and came close to taking the lead on multiple occasions. Goalkeeper Alisson, returning from a concussion, was instrumental with several key saves, including a spectacular effort to deny Mohammed Kudus in the first half.
Liverpool’s inconsistency allowed West Ham to stay in the contest, and both sides struck the woodwork in a tense second half. Alexis Mac Allister's free-kick crashed off the bar, while West Ham substitute Niclas Fullkrug also hit the post as the Hammers pushed for an equalizer.
However, Liverpool showed resilience in the closing moments, with Van Dijk rising above the defence in the 90th minute to head home the winning goal from a corner, sending the Anfield crowd into raptures.
Although not at their dominant best, Liverpool’s victory ensures Champions League qualification for the 2025-26 season and reinforces their title credentials. The win was a crucial response following their surprise defeat to Fulham, and it showcased the depth and determination of Jurgen Klopp’s squad.
For West Ham, the loss sees them drop to 17th place, still significantly clear of the relegation zone but in need of points to guarantee safety.
