The Super Eagles of Nigeria first choice goalkeeper Francis Uzoho has won the 2023 Cyprus Cup with Omonia Nicosia.
The Super Eagles shot stopper's team Omonia Nicosia won after defeating rival AEL Limassol by a lone goal in the final match that was played on Wednesday at the Neo GSP Stadium in Nicosia.
The Nwangele-born man between the sticks started his professional football career at the age of 14 in 2013 as a foward with Aspire Academy in Senegal, after which he was later converted to a goalkeeper.
Uzoho in 2016 then joined Deportivo de La Coruña's Juvenil squad but was unable to sign a professional contract due to the age limit.
He was then promoted to the reserve team of Deportivo de La Coruña's Juvenil during the 2017-2018 season and then made his senior debut same year when he manned the sticks in a 3-0 mauling of Segunda División B against Real Madrid Castilla.
Uzoho made his first team and La Liga debut on October 2017, starting in a 0–0 away draw against SD Eibar.
At the age of 18 years and 352 days, he became the youngest ever foreign goalkeeper to debut in La Liga, and the second-youngest player to appear in the league during the campaign at that point, only behind Real Madrid's Achraf Hakimi.
On national team assignment Uzoho was part of 2013 Nigeria's U-17 squad for FIFA U-17 World Cup at the age of 14 years as a back up to the first choice goalkeeper, Dele Alampasu.
Also in 2017, Uzoho received his first call-up to the Nigerian senior squad and made his full international debut on November 14, replacing Daniel Akpeyi in a 4–2 friendly win against Argentina.
Uzoho was named in Nigeria's 23-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia as Nigeria's first choice goalkeeper.
In March 2023, Uzoho was named "Nigerian Goalkeeper of the Year" at the Nigeria Pitch Awards.
During the Cyprus Cup, Uzoho was listed on the bench by the coach who preferred to start the match with the Brazilan goalkeeper Fabiano.
Omonia won the Cup for the 16th time and qualified for the 2023–24 Europa Conference League second qualifying round.
It’s also the second consecutive cup title for the club, and Francis Uzoho.
