The United States began their quest for an unprecedented third consecutive Women's World Cup title with a comfortable victory against debutants Vietnam in Auckland. Sophia Smith, one of the 14 players in the squad making their World Cup debut, scored twice before halftime for the four-time world champions.
Her first goal came with a low drilled finish from an angle, giving the top-ranked team in the world the lead. The Video Assistant Referee confirmed her second goal after a check for offside. Captain Lindsey Horan added the third goal in the 77th minute after an assist from Smith.
In front of a crowd of 41,107, including thousands of enthusiastic USA fans, Vietnam's goalkeeper Tran Thi Kim Thanh had a memorable moment when she saved Alex Morgan's penalty, earning praise from her teammates. The penalty was awarded for a foul on Trinity Rodman.
Despite Vietnam's defensive efforts, they rarely managed to advance beyond their own half and struggled to pose a threat in the attacking third. However, their determined performance helped keep the scoreline respectable.
