US Coach Berhalter Blasts Team After 5-1 Colombia Defeat

Posted : 09 June 2024

Gregg Berhalter, the coach of the United States team, expressed his disappointment with his players' performance and their lack of respect for Colombia following a crushing 5-1 defeat in a friendly match. The game, held at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, saw Colombia dominate from the outset, capitalizing on American errors with clinical attacking prowess.

Goals from Jhon Arias and Rafael Borre within the first 19 minutes set the tone for Colombia's dominance, despite Timothy Weah pulling one back for the US in the 58th minute. However, Colombia extended their lead with goals from Richard Rios, Jorge Carrascal, and Luis Sinisterra, marking the first time the US conceded five goals since 2009.

The defeat was a rude awakening for Berhalter's team, who witnessed Colombia's relentless attacking and missed chances. Berhalter emphasized the need for his players to understand the gravity of their performance, framing it not as a lesson learned but as a wakeup call. He criticized his team's defensive lapses, acknowledging that against a team like Colombia, such mistakes are fatal. Berhalter particularly noted the lack of respect shown by his players towards their opponents and the game itself, especially after the 75th minute.

Despite fielding a lineup comprising players from Europe's top leagues, the US struggled to match Colombia's intensity, especially in the early stages of the game. Colombia's swift attacks put the US on the back foot, with Arias opening the scoring within six minutes. Although the US had moments of promise, particularly Weah's goal early in the second half, Colombia remained dominant throughout, capitalizing on defensive vulnerabilities to secure a convincing victory.

As preparations continue for the Copa America, Berhalter's team faces Brazil in another friendly match, seeking to regroup and rectify their mistakes before their tournament opener against Bolivia. The defeat against Colombia highlighted areas needing improvement for the US team, with Berhalter emphasizing the necessity for better defensive organization and respect for their opponents to avoid similar outcomes in future matches.
