US advances to 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup semifinals with thrilling draw and penalty shootout

Posted : 10 July 2023
The United States advanced to the semifinals of the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup after a thrilling 2-2 draw with Canada, followed by a 3-2 victory in a penalty shootout.

The match, held at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, saw goals scored in the final 10 minutes of regular time and extra time, leading to the decisive shootout. U.S. goalkeeper Matt Turner played a crucial role, making two saves in the penalty kicks to secure his team's spot in the next round.

The first half remained tightly contested, with limited opportunities for both teams. Canada came close to breaking the deadlock just before halftime, as a cross deflected off Bryan Reynolds and narrowly missed the U.S. goal.

The second half saw increased action, with the U.S. attempting to seize the lead. Brandon Vazquez, substituted into the game, found the net in the 88th minute, putting the U.S. ahead.

However, Canada responded in stoppage time, equalizing from the penalty spot after a VAR review confirmed a handball by the U.S. The match then went into extra time, where Canada took the lead with a deflected strike from Jacob Shaffelburg.

But the U.S. fought back, as a shot from Gianluca Busio was blocked but deflected off Scott Kennedy and crossed the goal line, leveling the score at 2-2 in the 114th minute.

With the result unsettled, the teams resorted to a penalty shootout. Turner emerged as the hero for the United States, making two crucial saves, while Canada hit the post with their final attempt.

The U.S. prevailed 3-2 in the shootout, securing their place in the semifinals against Panama in San Diego, California.
