In the competitive world of football scouting, few individuals are as passionate about African talent as Nektarios Kosmadakis. An experienced football scout based in Greece, Nektarios has spent over 15 years identifying promising players, particularly from the grassroots level in Africa. His dedication to linking these players to European clubs has positioned him as a bridge between African potential and European football dreams.
The Journey of an International Football Scout
In an exclusive interview with Africa Sport Network (ASN), Nektarios emphasizes that passion is the key ingredient on his journey as an international football scout. “To become a football scout, one should first have a deep passion for football,” he says. His career has taken him across various European countries, primarily focusing on Greece and the Schengen region, where he has successfully facilitated the transition of players from different continents to European leagues.
Through extensive research, Nektarios has discovered that Africa is home to a wealth of football talent. However, one of the major challenges is visibility. “There are a lot of African players who are good enough to play in Europe, but sometimes, they seem so obscure that they are unable to get the opportunity,” he explains. His mission is to change that narrative by offering these players a chance to showcase their skills on bigger platforms.
Identifying the Right Talent
Scouting a player involves more than just watching a few highlight reels. According to Nektarios, the key qualities he looks for include athleticism, strength, and a strong character. “It is quite difficult to come here, so they have to be very strong mentally and physically. When I look out for players, they should be strong, fast, and technical,” he shares.
When comparing African players to their counterparts from other continents, Nektarios acknowledges their unique strengths. “African players are very fast, very strong, and when they work very well on the technical part, they can be among the world's best.” However, he points out that many African players tend to play with an intense, almost desperate energy. “African players seem to play like they are angry because it is difficult to make it to Europe, so they try to prove themselves.”
The Challenges of African Players in Europe
Once African players secure a spot in European teams, the real battle begins. They face the challenge of proving they are good enough for the highly competitive European football system. “There are several good players, and for one to distinguish themselves, they have to do extraordinary things,” Nektarios explains. The pressure to perform can be overwhelming, but those who can maintain their composure and continually improve their technical skills stand a better chance of succeeding.
How He Discovers African Talents
Despite not having visited Africa yet, Nektarios has established strong connections with football academies, clubs, and coaches across the continent. These partnerships allow him to receive videos of promising players with European potential. When these players get the opportunity to play in Italy or other European countries, he attends the tournaments in person to assess their capabilities.
“My plan is to come to Nigeria and observe tournaments in Lagos, Abuja, and other areas in Nigeria. I also want to go to Ghana and other African countries,” he reveals. His vision is to deepen his involvement with African grassroots football and create more opportunities for young players.
Ensuring Visibility for African Players
For Nektarios, scouting is not just about bringing players to Europe; it’s about ensuring they land in the right clubs where they can grow and thrive. “The most important thing is to find a good destination for these players. Everything else can fall into place. It's not enough to bring players from Africa, but to ensure they are in the right clubs.”
He advises African players with dreams of playing in Europe to keep a balanced perspective. “My advice is: don’t focus only on football. They should work hard at football, but since it can be difficult to make it to Europe, they should also focus on their education and their family. Frankly, not everyone will make it big in football.”
The Future of African Football Development
As European clubs continue to seek fresh talent, Nektarios believes that collaborations with African academies are essential for discovering promising players at the grassroots level. “The potential for good African players is endless; they just need more visibility.”
Beyond player scouting, he highlights an emerging opportunity for African investors. “Some European countries are seeking investors from Africa—African entrepreneurs who can acquire European clubs,” he notes. This presents a unique chance for African business figures to play a more significant role in the global football industry.
Nektarios Kosmadakis stands as a proof of the impact that passionate scouts can have on football. His relentless pursuit of African talent and commitment to bridging the gap between Africa and Europe continues to transform lives. With his plans to visit Nigeria and other African countries soon, the future looks bright for young footballers hoping to make their mark on the world stage.
