Union SG striker Boniface nominated for JPL Player of the Season
Posted : 31 May 2023
Victor Boniface has emerged as a strong contender for the highly coveted Jupiler Pro League Player of the Season Award, thanks to his exceptional performances for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise throughout the current campaign.
The 22-year-old Boniface has been a standout player, demonstrating his prowess on the field by registering an impressive tally of nine goals and eight assists in 36 appearances in the Belgian top-flight.
His contributions have been instrumental in Union SG's success this season, positioning the team in contention for a historic Jupiler Pro League title, a feat they have not achieved in 88 years.
However, Boniface faces stiff competition from his teammate and captain, Teddy Teuma, who has also displayed remarkable skills and leadership qualities throughout the season.
Additionally, Mike Trésor, the recipient of the prestigious Ebony Shoe award, poses a significant challenge to Boniface's chances of claiming the Player of the Season accolade.
Trésor has notched an incredible 23 assists, setting a record in the Belgian top-flight.
Among the other nominees for the award are Toby Alderweireld from Antwerp, Hugo Cuypers from KAA Ghent, Jean Butez from Antwerp, Vincent Janssen from Antwerp, Bryan Heynen from Genk, Joseph Paintsil from Genk, and Maxim De Cuyper from Westerlo.
These players have also showcased their exceptional abilities throughout the season, further intensifying the competition for the coveted title.
Notably, there is a surprising omission from the list of nominees in the form of Gift Orban.
Despite his impressive goal-scoring record, having netted 15 goals in just 15 games since joining Gent in January, Orban did not meet the requirement for "minimum minutes" played, resulting in his exclusion from the nominations.
The ultimate decision on the winner rests in the hands of the players participating in the Jupiler Pro League and Belgian players plying their trade abroad at the highest level.
Their votes will determine who will join the exclusive club of Jupiler Pro League Player of the Season winners.
It is worth mentioning that the only Nigerian player to have claimed this prestigious title thus far is Paul Onuachu, who secured the award during the 2020/2021 season, adding to the legacy of Nigerian excellence in Belgian football.
