UK and Republic of Ireland to Host Euro 2028 as joint bid triumphs
Posted : 10 October 2023
The United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland have been confirmed as the hosts for the 2028 European Championship, as announced by UEFA. Their joint bid faced no opposition as Turkey decided to focus on a bid with Italy for Euro 2032, which was also approved.
The UK and Ireland shifted their focus to Euro 2028 with UEFA's approval after abandoning plans to become Europe's preferred candidate for the 2030 World Cup. London's Wembley and Glasgow's Hampden Park served as venues for Euro 2020. Cardiff's Principality Stadium is proposed to host the opening match, with the final taking place at London's Wembley.
Former Wales captain Gareth Bale expressed his desire for Cardiff to host the opening match, citing the city's infrastructure and past experience in hosting major tournaments. This will mark the first time that the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Wales have hosted a major football tournament.
Euro 2028 matches are planned to be held at 10 different grounds, including Glasgow's Hampden Park and Dublin's Aviva Stadium. While Turkey initially bid to host both Euro 2028 and 2032, they withdrew from the Euro 2028 bid after their joint bid with Italy for 2032 was approved by UEFA.
The selection of host stadiums for Euro 2028 will involve choosing 10 out of 20 potential stadiums, with five in each of the host countries, by October 2026. This announcement comes after Italy hosted the Euros in 1968 and 1980, and Rome's Stadio Olimpico served as a venue during Euro 2020. Germany is set to host Euro 2024, and the most recent European Championship was played in 2021 instead of 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
