UEL roundup: Dele-Bashiru’s Lazio, Dessers' Rangers eliminated; Spurs exclude Olusesi, Ajayi

Posted : 18 April 2025

Here's a summary of the performances of Nigeria-eligible players in the UEFA Europa League quarterfinals held on Thursday, April 17, 2025.

At San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao, Leon Balogun had a night to forget as Rangers faced Athletic Bilbao. The experienced Super Eagles defender suffered an injury in the 50th minute following a collision with his teammate, John Souttar, early in the second half. Balogun was forced to leave the field and was substituted by Hamza Igamane. This injury adds to the concerns regarding Balogun's fitness, as he was already uncertain for the match prior to kickoff. Despite Cyriel Dessers playing the full 90 minutes, Rangers were unable to overcome the deficit, resulting in their elimination from the competition after losing to the Spanish side.

In Rome, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s Lazio also experienced heartbreak as they failed to progress to the semifinals. Dele-Bashiru was an unused substitute for Lazio, but his team showed strong character, defeating Bodø/Glimt 3-1 after extra time at the Stadio Olimpico. Despite leveling the aggregate score at 3-3, Lazio was unable to clinch victory in the penalty shootout, losing 3-2 in front of their home supporters.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur’s match against Eintracht Frankfurt saw Damola Ajayi and Callum Olusesi excluded from the matchday squad. Spurs won 1-0 at Commerzbank Arena, with Domnic Solanke scoring the decisive goal just before halftime from the penalty spot. Ajayi had previously made his senior debut for Spurs in January against Elfsborg, while Olusesi came on as a substitute during a match against TSG Hoffenheim.

Despite these individual challenges, the Europa League quarterfinals saw notable performances, though none of the players were able to secure progress for their respective teams. As the competition advances, these players will be hoping for better opportunities in future fixtures.
