UEL POTW nominee Lookman celebrates historic goal, anticipating Bayer final

Ademola Lookman emerged as the standout player for Atalanta in a historic match against Marseille, propelling the Nerazzurri to their first-ever final in a European competition with a commanding 3-0 victory at the Gewiss Stadium.


The product of Charlton Athletic's academy, Lookman's stellar performance earned him recognition from UEFA, as he was shortlisted for the UEFA Europa League Player of the Week for his outstanding display against Marseille.


Competing for the Player of the Week award for the semifinal second legs, Lookman faces stiff competition from Roma's Serbian goalkeeper Mile Svilar, who made an impressive twelve saves in the thrilling 2-2 draw against Bayer Leverkusen.


Lookman's pivotal moment came in the 30th minute against Marseille when he broke the deadlock with a powerful shot from outside the box, which deflected off Samuel Gigot's boot and found the back of the net.


Following Atalanta's historic achievement, Lookman expressed his delight at making history with the club and contributing to the team's success, stating: "Yes, we made history. An amazing performance from the team."


Speaking to UEFA's official website after the match, Lookman shared his joy at reaching the final and scoring a crucial goal, emphasizing his commitment to supporting the team in any way possible.


Atalanta is set to face Bayer Leverkusen in the 2024 Europa League final, with both teams making history in their journey to the pinnacle of European competition. Leverkusen's unbeaten run of 49 games adds further intrigue to the anticipated showdown.


With Nigerian talents Nathan Tella and Victor Boniface potentially featuring in Bayer Leverkusen's matchday squad for the final, a Nigerian player is poised to lift the trophy on May 22.


Lookman acknowledged Bayer Leverkusen as a formidable opponent but expressed confidence in Atalanta's abilities, emphasizing their strong performance throughout the season and their presence in both the Coppa Italia and Europa League finals.
