Posted : 21 June 2023
European Under-21 Championship kick-starts in Romania and Georgia who are jointly hosting the current tournament. Germany enters the competition as the defending champions, and they will face Israel in the opening game of Group 3 (the two teams also met twice in the qualifiers, with Germany emerging as the victors on both occasions). Italy and Spain hold the record for the most championships, with each nation having won the title five times.
The 16 participating teams have been divided into four groups, with the top two from each group advancing to the quarterfinals. The team finishing in first place in a group will face the runner-up from a parallel group (Group 1 intersects with Group 3, and Group 2 intersects with Group 4) in the knockout stage.
The quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals will be decisive matches. The top three teams in the tournament, comprising the finalists and the winner of the third-place game, will secure a place in the 2024 Olympic soccer tournament in Paris.
From 21 June to 8 July 2023, the tournament will take place in Cluj-Napoca, Bucharest, Batumi, Kutaisi, and Tbilisi. Let's take a look at the groupings:
Group A: Georgia (hosts), Portugal, Belgium, Netherlands
Group B: Romania (hosts), Spain, Ukraine, Croatia
Group C: Czechia, England, Germany (holders), Israel
Group D: Norway, Switzerland, France, Italy
