UEFA U21: Israel and England face each other in semi-final
Posted : 05 July 2023
Israel and England are set to face each other in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship semi-final at the Batumi Arena, which will also host the final. This will be their third competitive U21 fixture. In their previous encounters, England won 2-0 in 2023, while Israel emerged victorious with a 1-0 scoreline in 2013. They have also played two friendlies against each other.
Israel is making its debut in the knockout stages of the tournament, having eliminated hosts Georgia in a penalty shootout in the quarter-finals. England, on the other hand, has reached the semi-finals for the tenth time, one shy of the competition record. They secured a 1-0 victory over Portugal in the quarter-finals.
Israel had its most successful U21 Championship campaign as hosts in 2013, finishing third in the group stage. Their top scorer in the qualifying matches was Omri Gandelman, while Dor Turgeman made an impact in the tournament. England, the champions in 1982 and 1984, have struggled in recent finals, with their last semi-final appearance in 2017.
Both teams had successful qualifying campaigns for the 2023 finals, with Israel finishing second in their group and England winning eight out of ten matches. England topped Group C in the current tournament, winning all their matches except for a draw against holders Germany.
The encounter between Israel and England promises to be an exciting match as they vie for a spot in the final and the opportunity to claim the U21 Championship title.
