UEFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Spanish footballers Alvaro Morata and Rodri following their conduct during a Euro 2024 celebration in Madrid this month. On July 15, the day after Spain's victory over England in the European Championship final, the players chanted "Gibraltar is Spanish" during a public event in Madrid. Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory, is a sensitive subject in Spanish-British relations.
The Gibraltar Football Association lodged a formal complaint with Uefa regarding the chant, prompting the organization to assign an ethics and disciplinary inspector to investigate the incident. The probe aims to determine whether the players' actions breached Uefa's regulations.
The charges against Morata and Rodri include violations related to basic standards of decency and conduct, as well as using a sporting event for non-sporting expressions, which could bring the sport into disrepute.
