UEFA confirms Barcelona's Champions League participation due to insufficient Negriera case evidence
Posted : 01 July 2023
UEFA has confirmed that Barcelona will be able to participate in the Champions League next season, as there was not enough evidence from the "Negriera case" to warrant a suspension.
Barcelona received this official confirmation, but UEFA stated that if new evidence arises, they could impose a penalty during the season. This news is a boost for Barcelona both professionally and financially.
Barcelona has also managed to release €20 million from the players' budget by terminating Samuel Umtiti's contract. Umtiti, who had struggled with injuries and was loaned to Lecce, had his contract terminated, allowing Barcelona to free up additional funds.
Former president Josep Maria Bartomeu had signed Umtiti to a contract extension in 2018 to remove his release clause, but the defender's injuries hindered his performance.
With the financial relief, Barcelona aims to register more incoming players and continue offloading players who are not part of the club's plans. Franck Kessie and four loaned players from the previous season - Clemon Langella, Serginho Dest, Nico González, and Alex Cuellado - are among those whom Barcelona will seek to say goodbye to.
Overall, Barcelona's participation in the Champions League next season is confirmed by UEFA, and the club is taking steps to improve its financial situation and reshape the squad.
