UEFA charges Romania with offenses, including racist behavior, after Kosovo match

Posted : 15 September 2023
UEFA has taken action against Romania, charging them with multiple offenses after their match against Kosovo. The Euro 2024 qualifier held in Bucharest faced a 50-minute suspension due to provocative chants from a portion of Romanian fans. The charges include racist behavior, as some fans chanted "Serbia Serbia" and displayed a banner reading "Kosovo is Serbia."

Additionally, the Romanian Football Federation is facing charges for conveying a "provocative message of an offensive nature." The match was marred by controversial banners, as some fans held up another one stating "Bessarabia is Romania," referencing a historical territorial dispute.

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, which was followed by recognition from numerous countries, including the United Kingdom. However, Romania is among a few EU nations that do not acknowledge Kosovo's independence.

In addition to the offensive behavior, the FRF has also been charged by UEFA for fan misconduct, including throwing objects, lighting fireworks, and obstructing public passageways during the game. Despite these issues, Romania managed to win the match 2-0.
