UEFA Admits Refereeing Error in Euro 2024 Quarter-Final

Posted : 23 September 2024

Two and a half months after the intense quarter-final match of Euro 2024, where Spain triumphed over Germany 2-1 after extra time, UEFA has acknowledged that the German side was denied a clear penalty. The incident in question occurred in the 106th minute when Jamal Musiala struck the ball from 17 yards, only for it to hit Marc Cucurella’s hand within the penalty area. Despite this, referee Anthony Taylor allowed play to continue, and the VAR upheld the decision, concluding that a penalty was not warranted.

Recent reports from Relevo indicate that UEFA's professional committee provided referees with an update highlighting several examples that suggested a misjudgment occurred during the quarter-final. This update essentially admits that an error was made regarding the handball incident, which may have influenced the outcome of the match.

The communication to referees included specific guidelines stating that stricter actions should be enforced when a ball strikes a player's hand, particularly if it interrupts a scoring opportunity. In cases where the handball does not occur close to the body, a penalty should typically be awarded. Cucurella’s arm was noted to have extended away from his body, which according to these new guidelines, warranted a penalty decision.

This admission comes in the wake of a match that not only saw Germany eliminated but also allowed Spain to advance and ultimately win the tournament. The controversy surrounding the refereeing decisions adds another layer to the ongoing discussion about the effectiveness and consistency of officiating in high-stakes matches.
