UCL: Osimhen remains optimistic amid Napoli scoring slump
Posted : 22 September 2023
Victor Osimhen, the Super Eagles forward, addressed his recent scoreless streak with Napoli after contributing to their 2-1 triumph over Braga in Tuesday's Champions League opener.
Last season, the 24-year-old was a standout performer, netting 31 goals across competitions, propelling Napoli to a league title and a Champions League quarter-final spot. Osimhen started the current campaign strong with three goals in two Serie A matches.
However, he hasn't scored for Napoli in their recent league matches against Lazio and Genoa, or in the Champions League victory over Braga. Despite Napoli's 18 attempts against Braga, they only converted one shot on target, courtesy of Giovanni Di Lorenzo, while the second came from an own goal.
Reflecting on the match, Osimhen found it odd not to have scored but was satisfied with Napoli securing the win. "It feels unusual not scoring in a match. As a forward, I thrive on goals, but it's not a concern. I've experienced it before and am ready for such phases," Osimhen shared on UEFA's official website. He emphasized the importance of supporting the team in ways beyond scoring.
Osimhen aims to rediscover his scoring touch in Napoli's upcoming league match against Bologna on Sunday.
