George Ilenikhena continued his impressive form by scoring the decisive goal in AS Monaco’s 2-1 victory over Barcelona in their UEFA Champions League clash at the Stade Louis II on Thursday night. This marks his second consecutive goal against the Spanish side, highlighting his growing influence in Europe’s elite competition.
The match took a dramatic turn early on when Barcelona’s Eric Garcia received a red card in the 10th minute, leaving the visitors a man down. Monaco capitalized on their numerical advantage shortly after, as Maghnes Akliouche opened the scoring with a well-placed strike into the bottom right corner just five minutes later.
Barcelona responded through their young talent, Lamine Yamal, who equalized with a stunning long-range effort. The 16-year-old’s precise shot from outside the box brought Barcelona back on level terms, marking his eighth goal contribution of the season.
Monaco's coach introduced Ilenikhena in the 59th minute to replace Breel Embolo, with the team pushing for the win. The Nigerian striker proved his worth once again, making an instant impact and justifying the tactical change.
In the 71st minute, Ilenikhena connected with a pass from Vanderson, launching a swift counter-attack. With remarkable composure, the Lagos-born forward placed his shot past Barcelona’s goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, securing Monaco’s lead.
At just 18 years and 34 days old, Ilenikhena broke Kylian Mbappé’s record to become the youngest player to score for Monaco in the Champions League. Mbappé had previously held the record at 18 years and 63 days, scoring against Manchester City in 2017.
This goal also marked Ilenikhena's first for Monaco since joining the club, having previously netted against Barcelona last December while playing for Royal Antwerp, making him the youngest Nigerian to score in the Champions League.
