U20 World Cup: Italy eliminated England courtesy to a late penalty
Posted : 01 June 2023
Italy defeated England 2-1 in the FIFA Under-20 World Cup round of 16 on Wednesday thanks to a late penalty, setting up a quarterfinal matchup with Colombia.
With three minutes left in the game, Cesare Casadei, an Italian player for Chelsea in England, converted the game-winning penalty to win it for his country. When a review requested by the video assistance referee, the penalty was given after England defender Jarell Quansah was called for a handball.
Eight minutes into the game, Giuseppe Ambrosino's excellent outside-of-the-foot through pass set up Tommaso Baldanzi, whose first-time shot slipped under England goalkeeper Matthew Cox to give Italy the lead.
Midway through the first half, though, England fought back. Alfie Devine of Tottenham connected with an appealing cross from the left with a powerful volley at the near post to score his second goal of the competition.
However, Italy will continue to play for a spot in the coveted youth competition's semifinals while England, the 2017 champions who had won their group in Argentina, will return home.
