Tyrone Mings’ Champions League debut turned into a nightmare after a bizarre mistake that led to Aston Villa's first European defeat of the season. Returning to action after 14 months out with a knee injury, Mings had been celebrated for his journey from Chippenham Town to the prestigious competition. However, his match was marred by a costly error that handed Brugge a penalty and a 1-0 victory.
The incident occurred when Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez attempted a goal-kick, which was passed to Mings inside the penalty area. Unaware that the ball was in play, Mings inexplicably picked it up, leading to an immediate penalty decision from referee Tobias Stieler. After a VAR review, the decision was confirmed, and Hans Vanaken converted the penalty to secure the win for Brugge.
Villa manager Unai Emery did not hold back in his criticism of Mings, describing the mistake as "the biggest mistake I witnessed in my career." The confusion surrounding the incident was evident, with players and officials unsure at first. Replays revealed that Mings had failed to recognize that the ball had already been in play after Martinez’s goal-kick, leading to the costly handball.
This wasn’t the first time such a mistake has occurred in the Champions League. Last season, during the quarter-final first leg between Arsenal and Bayern Munich, a similar incident took place when Gabriel mishandled a pass from his goalkeeper, David Raya. In that case, the referee allowed the kick to be retaken, with Bayern's manager, Thomas Tuchel, criticizing the decision as a "kid’s mistake" that should have resulted in a penalty.
