The ‘Flying Antelopes’, Rangers International F.C., who will be crowned champions of the 2023/2024 NPFL season, are already in Jos with the full complement of their playing staff. They are set to engage Gombe United in a dead rubber game of the last fixture of the season, with their eyes set on ending the season on a high and flying back to the Coal City with the giant trophy.

Having amassed an unassailable five-point lead ahead of second-placed Remo Stars of Ikenne, after a 2-0 win over Bendel Insurance in the penultimate round fixtures, and going into the last match day fixture with bottom-placed Gombe United, coach Fidelis Ilechukwu and his team have their work cut out.

Against a side that has managed to record only one win in its last six matches, the ‘Building One’, as Ilechukwu likes to be called, is optimistic about getting a good result to make the trophy presentation memorable. The management has made arrangements to fly the team and the gold-plated trophy back to Enugu on a chartered flight for a trophy tour around the Enugu metropolis.

In the reverse fixture in Enugu earlier this year, the soon-to-be-crowned league champions triumphed 4-1 with goals from Godwin Obaje, who scored a brace, and Chidiebere Nwobodo and Kenechukwu Agu, who each netted a goal. All these players are still present to navigate the expected tough challenge from the coach Ibrahim Kwaranga-led side inside the New Zaria Road Stadium, Jos, Plateau State, with kickoff fixed for 3:00 pm.

With the crème de la crème of the football industry expected at the New Jos Stadium to witness history being made as Rangers are crowned champions of the top-flight league for the 8th time in their fifty-four-year history, some of the gladiators on the pitch, like top scorer Godwin Obaje, will be looking to increase his goal tally from eleven for the season. Ejike Ugochukwu will be increasing his appearances to thirty-seven matches in his first season in top flight, while goalkeeper Japhet Opubo will aim to raise his clean-sheet count from twelve in twenty-eight games.

Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu, ‘The Building One’, who has led the likes of M.F.M F.C. and Plateau United to runner-up positions in the past, will be experiencing his first league triumph with Rangers and is optimistic about a grand finish to the season.

Ilechukwu said, “It is not easy to be a champion and I thank the Enugu state governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, for his dedication to our aspirations, as well as the G.M/CEO of the club, Barrister Amobi Ezeaku, who has done very well in motivating the team at all times.

“We can’t forget the strong support from our fans all over the world. The game in Jos is significant to us because we want to win every game.

“We want to see Rangers hit seventy points; we are on 67 points right now.

“No match is a small match and we shall approach the match against Gombe United with all the respect it deserves but with the mindset of winning.”
