Trinidad and Tobago kicked off the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup group stage with a convincing 3-0 win over Saint Kitts and Nevis in Group A at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
This victory marked Trinidad and Tobago's first win in the Gold Cup group stage since the 2015 edition. It was also a historic moment for Saint Kitts and Nevis, as they played their inaugural Gold Cup group stage match.
Trinidad and Tobago dominated possession in the first half and their efforts paid off just before halftime. In the 43rd minute, Alvin Jones displayed great skill by controlling Neveal Hackshaw's lofted pass with his chest and volleying it into the net, giving the Soca Warriors a 1-0 lead.
Maintaining their momentum in the second half, Trinidad and Tobago extended their lead in spectacular fashion. Substitute Ajani Fortune received the ball outside the Saint Kitts and Nevis area, skillfully evaded three defenders, and unleashed a powerful shot to make it 2-0 in the 65th minute.
Eager to secure a convincing win, Trinidad and Tobago increased their advantage to 3-0 in the 73rd minute. Intense defensive pressure forced a turnover, resulting in Levi Garcia's deep cross deflecting off a Saint Kitts and Nevis defender and finding the back of the net.
From that point onward, the Trinidad and Tobago defense tightened their grip on the game, ensuring the victory and collecting all three points.
In their next match, Trinidad and Tobago will face Jamaica on June 28th at City Park in St. Louis, while Saint Kitts and Nevis will take on the United States on the same day.
