A fast start from Mahmoud Trezeguet, who scored twice, propelled Mohamed Salah-led Egypt to a 2-1 victory over Burkina Faso in a World Cup qualifier in Cairo on Thursday. Trezeguet, playing for a Turkish club, found the net with a header three minutes in and then with his left foot four minutes later, giving Egypt a four-point lead over Guinea-Bissau in Group A. Salah, returning to the national team after a hamstring injury at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, assisted the first goal.
Lassina Traore narrowed the gap 11 minutes into the second half, but Burkina Faso couldn't avoid their first loss, slipping to third place. Meanwhile, Guinea-Bissau was unexpectedly held to a 0-0 draw at home by Ethiopia and now prepares to host Egypt on Monday. Egypt is among six teams with perfect records, as Algeria experienced a surprising 2-1 home defeat to Guinea in Group G, with Aguibou Camara scoring the decisive goal in the 63rd minute.
In other matches, Senegal aimed to reclaim first place in Group B by defeating the Democratic Republic of Congo but was held to a 1-1 draw after Fiston Mayele equalized five minutes before the end. This left Senegal two points behind Sudan, who won 2-0 against Mauritania, with DR Congo lying third. Crystal Palace's Jordan Ayew scored in added time to lift Ghana from fifth to second in Group I with a 2-1 comeback win over Mali.
Libya rose to the top of Group D with a 2-1 victory over Mauritius in Benghazi. Faisal al Badri converted a penalty, but Kevin Bru equalized for the islanders. Ahmed Ekrawa's second goal of the qualifying campaign before halftime secured the win for Libya, despite being reduced to 10 men when Ali Youssef was sent off. Libya now leads with seven points, ahead of Cameroon and Cape Verde, who face off on Saturday.
