Transfer Update: PSG demands Kylian Mbappé sign new contract, prevents 2024 free transfer
Posted : 06 July 2023
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has stated that forward Kylian Mbappé must sign a new contract if he wishes to remain at the club. PSG is determined not to let Mbappé leave for free when his contract expires in 2024.
Last month, Mbappé sent a letter to PSG expressing his intention not to extend his contract. However, he clarified that he did not ask the club to facilitate a move to Real Madrid, despite the Spanish giants' past interest in him.
The dilemma PSG faces is whether to let Mbappé enter the final year of his contract and potentially lose the €180 million ($195.7m) investment made to sign him from AS Monaco in 2017.
Al-Khelaifi emphasized that the club does not want to lose the world's best player without any compensation. He made it clear that if Mbappé changes his mind about staying, it is not PSG's fault.
As the top scorer in Ligue 1 for the past five seasons, Mbappé is a key player for PSG, especially after losing Lionel Messi, who joined Inter Miami on a free transfer. PSG is keen to retain Mbappé's services.
Mbappé also dismissed any notion that French President Emmanuel Macron has any influence over his career decisions, refuting the suggestion after Macron expressed his desire for the forward to remain in Paris.
