Transfer Talks: Leipzig confirms Josko Gvardiol's transfer request to Manchester City
Posted : 03 July 2023
According to RB Leipzig's sports director Max Eberl, Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol has expressed his desire to move to Manchester City. Eberl confirmed that Gvardiol and his representatives have communicated their wish for a transfer to the Premier League club. Talks between the two clubs are underway, and Eberl did not provide any further details at the moment.
It has been reported that Gvardiol's potential transfer could command a fee of around £86m, which would make him the most expensive defender in the history of football.
Gvardiol played a key role in Croatia's journey to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, while Leipzig secured a third-place finish in the Bundesliga and won the German Cup last season.
Leipzig's Champions League campaign ended with an 8-1 aggregate defeat to Manchester City, losing 7-0 at the Etihad Stadium following a 1-1 draw in Germany.
If Gvardiol departs, he would join a list of high-profile players leaving Leipzig this summer, including Christopher Nkunku, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Konrad Laimer.
Nkunku has joined Chelsea, Szoboszlai has signed with Liverpool, and Laimer has moved to domestic rivals Bayern Munich.
Eberl acknowledged the disappointment and concern of the fans regarding these departures but assured them that the club has been prepared for such scenarios. He promised that Leipzig would continue to build a competitive and exciting team despite the player exits.
