Transfer Talk of July 12: Completed transfer of Pau Torres from Villarreal to Aston Villa
Posted : 12 July 2023
Aston Villa has officially confirmed the acquisition of Spanish center-back Pau Torres from Villarreal for an undisclosed fee. The 26-year-old previously played under Villa manager Unai Emery during their time together at Villarreal from 2020 to 2023.
Having joined Villarreal's youth academy in 2003, Torres played a significant role in their success, notably helping them secure a fifth-place finish in La Liga last season. With 173 appearances and 12 goals for his boyhood club, he has showcased his talent and versatility.
Torres has also represented Spain 23 times, making appearances in Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup.
In 2016, Torres made his debut for Villarreal, becoming the first player from his small Valencian hometown to achieve this feat in 13 years.
He quickly established himself as a crucial member of the squad and was part of the victorious Villarreal team that won the 2021 Europa League under Emery, where he even contributed as a scorer in the penalty shootout triumph over Manchester United.
This signing marks Aston Villa's second addition this summer, following the arrival of Belgium midfielder Youri Tielemans on a free transfer from Leicester City, who were relegated last season. Villa concluded the previous Premier League campaign in seventh place, securing qualification for the Europa Conference League.
