Transfer-listed Super Eagles star, despite permanent deal

Posted : 02 August 2023
Adana Demirspor President Murat Sancak has made a surprising revelation that the club is looking to part ways with Nigerian international Henry Onyekuru, just days after the winger signed a permanent deal following a successful loan spell from Olympiakos last season.

During his loan stint, Onyekuru showcased remarkable form in the Süper Lig, contributing eight goals and three crucial assists in 28 league games, which played a significant role in Adana Demirspor's historic fourth-place finish and their qualification for the Europa Conference League.

The club was thrilled by his performance and quickly decided to make his move permanent on July 1, paying Olympiakos €3.5 million for his services.

However, the excitement turned into confusion when Onyekuru's name was absent from Adana Demirspor's European roster for the Europa Conference League qualifiers against Cluj, indicating possible tension between the player and the club.

President Murat Sancak has now confirmed the rumored friction, stating that Onyekuru is indeed on the way out.

He mentioned that a final offer for the player's departure will be received and evaluated accordingly, expressing that they most likely do not need him at the moment.

Sancak highlighted the depth in their squad, pointing to other talented players like David Akintola, Yusuf Sari, Nani, and Yusuf Erdogan, as evidence that they have quality options.

While it seems Onyekuru's future with Adana Demirspor is uncertain, Sancak did leave the possibility open for new signings, stating that if they find a suitable player who fits their terms, they might consider bringing them in.

Onyekuru's football journey has taken him through various leagues in Belgium, France, Greece, and Turkey, where he experienced title success with Galatasaray.

With his talent and experience, he remains an attractive prospect for potential suitors as he seeks a fresh start away from Adana Demirspor.
