Trabzonspor set to sign Onuachu with mandatory purchase for two players

Posted : 13 June 2024

Trabzonspor, the Turkish Super Lig club, is actively pursuing a deal to secure the services of Southampton's Nigerian international, Paul Onuachu, ahead of the upcoming 2024-2025 season. Onuachu recently completed a successful loan stint at Trabzonspor, where he made a significant impact by netting seventeen goals and providing four assists in 25 appearances across all competitions, starting twenty-two of those matches.

Despite Trabzonspor's strong desire to retain Onuachu for the next campaign, negotiations have hit a hurdle due to Southampton's valuation of the player at fifteen million euros, which the Turkish club finds challenging to meet financially. Reports from Turkish sports daily Fanatik indicate that Trabzonspor is exploring the possibility of securing Onuachu on another loan deal, as a permanent transfer appears financially impractical at this time.

To sweeten the proposed deal, Trabzonspor has offered to include two of their players in negotiations with Göztepe, a club partly owned by Sport Republic. This strategic move aims to facilitate a smoother transaction and potentially lower the financial burden on Trabzonspor in acquiring Onuachu's services.

Furthermore, discussions have included the suggestion of incorporating a compulsory purchase option into any loan agreement for Onuachu. This clause would provide Trabzonspor with the opportunity to secure the striker's permanent transfer after a designated period, should certain performance criteria be met during his loan spell.

Trabzonspor initially brought Onuachu on board last September, agreeing to a season-long loan deal from Southampton for a fee of 1.5 million euros. The forward, a product of FC Ebedei, remains under contract with Southampton until June 30, 2026, adding an additional layer of complexity to the ongoing negotiations between the involved parties.
