Trabzonspor President Ertuğrul Doğan has stated that the club is unable to meet the €15 million, equivalent to ₦27.4 billion, asking price for 30-year-old Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu.
Trabzonspor, a prominent team in the Turkish Super Lig, expressed interest in acquiring Onuachu permanently after his successful loan spell last season, where he emerged as the club's top scorer and contributed to their third-place finish in the Süper Lig.
Despite their interest, the club has struggled to match Southampton’s valuation of the striker, who is considered surplus to requirements by the English team. Doğan revealed that Trabzonspor had only proposed €8 million plus additional bonuses for Onuachu, but this offer was turned down by Southampton.
Doğan emphasized that Trabzonspor is not prepared to increase their offer given Onuachu's age. He conveyed their position, stating, "Trabzonspor cannot afford to pay €15 million for a player who is 30 years old. We only offered €8 million with bonuses."
The Trabzonspor chief remains hopeful of reaching an agreement before the Turkish transfer window closes. "Onuachu was on loan with us last season, and while his current club demands around €15 million, we have offered €8 million plus bonuses. We will see if an agreement can be reached."
The club has been struggling at the start of the season, failing to score in their initial league games and missing out on the group stages of both the UEFA Europa League and the Conference League. This poor performance led to the departure of Abdullah Avcı, who was replaced by Şenol Güneş.
Trabzonspor’s search for reinforcements continues as they seek to improve their fortunes in both domestic and European competitions.
