TP Mazembe edges Esperance with a slim 1-0 advantage in AFL

Posted : 23 October 2023
In the African Football League (AFL) quarter-final first leg, TP Mazembe secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Tunisian side Esperance, thanks to a first-half goal from the emerging talent, Cheick Oumar Fofana.

The 19-year-old forward made his mark just 11 minutes into the match at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Tanzania, granting the DR Congo club a slim lead. TP Mazembe exhibited early dominance, and Fofana capitalized on a precise delivery from Phillipe Kinzumbi to net the decisive goal.

Esperance came close to equalizing shortly after when Oussama Bouguerra's attempt was thwarted by a remarkable reflex save from TP Mazembe's goalkeeper, Baggio Siadi. Kinzumbi had an opportunity to extend Mazembe's lead in the early stages of the second half, but his powerful volley was tipped over the crossbar by Amanallah Memmiche, the Esperance keeper.

Memmiche once again denied Kinzumbi in the late stages of the match after some slick build-up play from the visitors. TP Mazembe managed to hold on, securing a crucial away goal and an advantage heading into the second leg, which is scheduled to take place in Tunisia this Wednesday.

This closely contested match unfolded between two of Africa's most prestigious clubs, with TP Mazembe, the five-time African champions, narrowly coming out on top. However, as they prepare for the return leg on Esperance's home turf, they are well aware of the challenging atmosphere that awaits them, as the tie remains delicately balanced.
