Tottenham Survive FA Cup Scare with Extra-Time Win Over Tamworth

Posted : 12 January 2025

Tottenham narrowly avoided an embarrassing FA Cup upset as they needed extra time to defeat non-league Tamworth 3-0 in the third round on Sunday. Despite the significant gulf in league standings, with Tottenham sitting 12th in the Premier League and Tamworth 16th in the National League, the underdogs put on a spirited performance that pushed Spurs to their limits.

Missed opportunities by Tamworth, including early chances from Beck-Ray Enoru and Jordan Cullinane-Liburd, ultimately allowed Tottenham to escape a potential historic humiliation.

The breakthrough for Spurs came in the 101st minute when Brennan Johnson's cross deflected off Tamworth's Nathan Tshikuna for an own goal. Dejan Kulusevski added a second six minutes later, capitalizing on a pass from Son Heung-min to slot the ball past the Tamworth goalkeeper.

Johnson then sealed the victory with a clinical strike in the 118th minute, providing a somewhat misleading scoreline for what was a challenging match for Tottenham.

Tamworth, a part-time side whose players balance football with day jobs, impressed on their modest home turf, the Lamb Ground.

With a 4,000-capacity stadium and a sloping artificial pitch, the setting was a stark contrast to Tottenham's usual Premier League venues. Fans brought a festive atmosphere, with tinfoil FA Cup replicas and even spectators peering over garden walls to catch the action. However, the underdogs' fairy-tale hopes were dashed despite their valiant effort.

For Tottenham, the victory offers some relief amid a troubled season but raises concerns about their form. Ange Postecoglou's side, still chasing their first major trophy since 2008, must significantly improve as they prepare for a League Cup semifinal second leg against Liverpool.

Meanwhile, other FA Cup matches saw League Two Doncaster eliminate Championship side Hull on penalties, with several high-profile clashes, including Arsenal vs. Manchester United, scheduled later in the day.
