Tottenham striker eligible for Super Eagles called up by England

Posted : 03 October 2024

Tottenham Hotspur striker Dominic Solanke has been included in the England national team for upcoming matches against Finland and Greece in the UEFA Nations League, as reported by several English media outlets, including The Athletic. His selection comes as the team prepares for these crucial games that could tie him to the national side.

Born in England and a product of the Cobham Academy, Solanke is eligible to represent England through his birthplace and his mother. Additionally, he qualifies to play for Nigeria due to his Nigerian heritage from his father. This dual eligibility puts him in a unique position as he contemplates his international future.

According to FIFA's eligibility regulations, participating in any match for England would preclude Solanke from representing the Super Eagles, especially since he is no longer an under-21 player. This makes his upcoming appearances pivotal for his international career and future decisions regarding national representation.

At 26, Solanke has a rich history with the England youth teams, having played at various levels, including U16s, U18s, U19s, and U21s. Notably, he was part of the U17 squad that won the European Championship and the U20 team that triumphed in the World Cup. His experience with these teams has positioned him well for a role in the senior squad.

His previous call-up to the England team occurred in 2017 when he was selected for a friendly match against Brazil, where he replaced Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy. However, due to inconsistent performances at the club level in the years that followed, he struggled to secure a spot on the national team until recently.

Solanke's fortunes changed significantly after he scored 19 goals in the Premier League last season, leading to his transfer to Tottenham Hotspur for a club-record fee during the summer window. Although he faced a challenging start at his new club, failing to score in his first three appearances, he has since found his rhythm, netting goals in his last three matches.

As England gears up for their fixtures against Greece at Wembley Stadium on October 10 and Finland at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium on October 13, Solanke's recent form could prove essential for the national team's success and his future in international football.
