Tottenham Hotspur has reached an agreement to bring in Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig, with an option to make the deal permanent at the conclusion of the season. The 27-year-old forward, who previously played in the Premier League with Chelsea, will undergo a medical examination in London, and Spurs will cover his wages for the remainder of the campaign.
Werner, having scored 23 goals in 89 appearances for Chelsea, returned to RB Leipzig in 2022. His move to Tottenham comes as the club seeks to bolster its attacking options, particularly with Son Heung-min participating in the Asian Cup and James Maddison sidelined due to injury.
Werner's Premier League experience with Chelsea, where he won the Champions League, adds depth to Tottenham's attacking lineup. The German forward scored 23 goals in 89 appearances for Chelsea before returning to RB Leipzig in 2022. In the current season, he has netted two goals in 14 appearances for Leipzig.
The move to Tottenham is expected to provide Werner with an opportunity to secure regular playing time and further contribute to his ambitions, including a potential spot in Germany's squad for the upcoming European Championship.
Leipzig manager Marco Rose confirmed Werner's desire for a loan move, citing the player's aim to participate in the European Championship. Werner, who holds 57 caps for Germany, hasn't played for the national team since a friendly defeat against Belgium in March 2023.
As Spurs prepare to face Manchester United in their upcoming Premier League fixture on Sunday, January 14, Werner's addition will provide valuable options for the North London side, especially with key players like Son Heung-min and James Maddison facing temporary absences.
