Tottenham, Juventus Start Season with Mixed Results as Atalanta Shines in Serie A Opener

Posted : 20 August 2024

After missing out on a Champions League spot in Ange Postecoglou's first season at Tottenham, the club is determined to secure a top-four finish this year. However, their opening match of the Premier League against Leicester, a newly-promoted team, ended in disappointment. Despite dominating the game and creating numerous opportunities, Tottenham could only manage a 1-1 draw, demonstrating a lack of clinical finishing.

Tottenham initially took the lead with a well-taken goal by Pedro Porro, assisted by James Maddison in the 29th minute. The visitors controlled the game for most of the match but struggled in front of goal. Their inability to capitalize on chances was punished in the 57th minute when Jamie Vardy, who had been a doubt for the match, scored the equalizer for Leicester. Vardy had another chance to give Leicester the lead in the 70th minute but was denied by Tottenham's goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario. Despite an attacking substitution by Postecoglou and continued pressure from Tottenham, they were unable to secure a winning goal.

Domonique Solanke made his debut for Tottenham after a €65 million transfer from Bournemouth. The striker was active, registering three attempts on goal, but was unable to contribute to the team's success. Manor Solomon, another new signing, was not included in the matchday squad.

In Serie A, Juventus, under new coach Thiago Motta, made a strong start with a 3-0 victory over Como. Samuel Ambangolana, making his senior debut, scored the opening goal just before halftime. Tim Weah added a second goal shortly after the break, and Andrea Cambiaso sealed the win with a goal in injury time. Motta, who joined Juventus after a successful stint at Bologna, has made an impressive start to his tenure.

Atalanta, who were defeated by Real Madrid in the European Supercup, began their Serie A campaign with a commanding 4-0 win over Lecce. The team’s two new signings, Marco Brescianini and Matteo Retegui, were instrumental in the victory, with Brescianini scoring twice and Retegui adding two more goals, including a penalty.
