Tottenham Hotspur1- 3 Brentford: Mbeumo's double helped Brentford come from behind to beat Tottenham

Posted : 20 May 2023
Brentford overcame a deficit to defeat Tottenham in their final home game of a disappointing season, thanks in large part to a brilliant double from Bryan Mbeumo.

Mbeumo scored two goals into the far corner early in the second half, and teammate Yoane Wissa added the final touch as Brentford defeated Tottenham, who had taken the lead via captain Harry Kane in the first half.

Mbeumo proved to Brentford supporters that they can depend on him to score goals just days after attack partner Ivan Toney received an eight-month suspension for violating Football Association betting regulations.

Kane, whose future at Spurs is uncertain, displayed some magic when he curled the ball expertly into the top corner from a free-kick.

His teammates were inspired by it, and they played with assurance and elegance while creating countless opportunities that they ought to have converted on.

However, Brentford quickly replied in the second half, and Mbeumo took advantage of his opportunities to shoot twice past goalkeeper Fraser Forster in that time. Their lack of ruthlessness was punished.

Tottenham had little chance of scoring a late equaliser when replacement Shandon Baptise stripped Oliver Skipp of the ball and set up Wissa for an easy finish.

Another performance that perfectly captured Tottenham's season: promising periods followed by a humiliating outcome.

"The intensity dropped quite a lot in the second half," said interim boss Ryan Mason. "We needed to take our opportunities when they came in the first half.

"They really took theirs. It's difficult to take. It's not just one half of football, you have to do it for the full game."

Brentford feels certain they will conclude a successful season among the top 10 in the Premier League, whereas Tottenham's incredibly narrow chance of qualifying for Europe is swiftly diminishing.
