Tottenham Hotspur signs £40 million midfielder James Maddison

Tottenham Hotspur has completed the signing of England midfielder James Maddison from Leicester City for a five-year contract worth £40 million. The 26-year-old, who has earned three caps for England, played a crucial role in Leicester's historic FA Cup triumph in 2021.
Maddison joined Leicester from Norwich in 2018 for a transfer fee of approximately £20 million and made 203 appearances for the club. Despite scoring 10 goals in the Premier League last season, he was unable to prevent Leicester's relegation.
Maddison's arrival at Tottenham provides a much-needed boost to their midfield, as they have lacked a top-class playmaker since the departure of Christian Eriksen in 2020.
The Coventry-born midfielder has contributed 55 goals and 41 assists during his time at Leicester, showcasing his creative abilities. Newcastle had previously shown interest in signing Maddison but have now shifted their focus to AC Milan's Sandro Tonali.
In addition to Maddison, Tottenham recently acquired Italian goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli and made Sweden midfielder Dejan Kulusevski's loan move from Juventus permanent under new manager Ange Postecoglou.
However, the club is keen to retain the services of England forward Harry Kane, despite reported interest from Bayern Munich. There were rumors of a £70 million bid from Bayern for Kane, but sources from Tottenham have denied receiving such an offer.
Meanwhile, Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks is likely to make a move in the opposite direction, with a £10 million transfer to Leicester in the works. Maddison's signing marks another departure from Leicester, following Youri Tielemans' agreement to join Aston Villa on a free transfer. Leicester will kick off their next season in the Championship against local rivals Coventry City.
