Tottenham Hotspur is facing another blow to their defensive lineup as manager Ange Postecoglou reveals that centre-back Cristian Romero could be sidelined for up to five weeks due to a hamstring strain. The Argentine suffered the injury during the team's recent 2-1 victory over Everton.
This setback adds to Tottenham's defensive challenges, with defenders Micky van de Ven and Ryan Sessegnon already out due to injuries, and full-back Destiny Udogie suspended for the upcoming match against Brighton on Thursday.
Postecoglou expressed disappointment at losing Romero, stating, "[It's] disappointing to lose [Romero], for sure." The 25-year-old had recently returned from a three-match suspension in November and December after being red-carded in Tottenham's 4-1 defeat to Chelsea.
Despite the setbacks in Romero's absence, Spurs managed to secure victories in their past three matches. However, the manager acknowledged the significant impact of losing Romero again for an extended period, estimating his absence to be around four to five weeks.
Netherlands defender Micky van de Ven, who had formed a promising partnership with Romero, is also on the mend. Van de Ven suffered a hamstring injury against Chelsea in November.
While he is "getting closer" to returning to first-team training, Postecoglou anticipates that the 22-year-old may not be ready for competitive action until the Premier League match against Manchester United on January 14.
The manager emphasized the need to assess Van de Ven's condition after such a prolonged absence before deciding on his involvement in matches.
